赵准，藁城人，高个儿，胡须长而美，性情刚强坚毅、方正严肃，从早到晚没有萎靡神色，不苟言笑。二十多岁才开始读书。当时有一个聪明的少年，每天能背诵几千字，赵先生以不如他为耻辱，每天所背诵的书一定要和他等同，白天背诵的数量不足，就整夜读书以至忘记了睡觉。赵准在顺天府乡试中中举，做了学官。藩王令诸郡王都跟随赵准学习经学，赵准给他们讲解很是详尽恳切，门下弟子常有几十人，规矩尺度很是严格，诸生走路站立都有规范。赵准尤其重视背诵，他以身作则，不知疲倦，诸生侍奉在侧，神情敬畏。当时太守有十个儿子，五个孩子非常骄慢放纵，即使是太守也没办法。一天，太守听闻赵先生严厉，亲自带着五个孩子来，并且给予赵准一把朴刀，宽二寸，厚半寸，在它上面写道：“专治五个孩子，不要涉及其他学生。王令诸郡王皆受经，为讲说甚详恳，门弟子常数十。矩矱严，诸生步立皆有则。尤重背诵，以身先之，无倦，诸生侍侧凛凛。时太守有十子，五子骄纵甚，虽守无如之何。一日，闻赵先生严，自领其子来，且遗一朴，广二寸，厚半寸，书其面曰：“专治五子，毋及余生。”诸子一望见，即凛然，皆折节受学守规。

It was only in his twenties that he began to study. At that time, there was a smart young man who could recite thousands of words a day. Mr. Zhao felt ashamed to be outdone by him and made it his goal to match the young man's daily recitations. If he fell short during the day, he would stay up all night reading until he forgot to sleep. Zhao Quan passed the imperial examinations in the Shuntian Prefecture and became an academic official. The prince ordered all the princes to learn from Zhao Quan, who taught them diligently and earnestly, with dozens of students under his guidance. He was very strict with the rules and discipline, and his students followed his every move with awe. At that time, the prefect had ten sons, five of whom were extremely arrogant and unruly, and even the prefect could do nothing about them. One day, hearing of Mr. Zhao's strictness, the prefect personally brought the five boys to him and presented him with a simple sword, two inches wide and half an inch thick, with the inscription: "Treat these five boys exclusively, and do not involve any other students."
